It’s Easter time! It’s Easter time!
How do you like my new Easter shrug, Jack?
Jack
Girls! That’s all they think about. Clothes and more clothes.
Flossie
Hey, Jack! That’s not true. There are a lot of things to think about at
Easter time.
Jack
Oh, yeh? Like what?
Flossie
Well, there are Easter fairs all over town and Easter baskets with
chocolate bunnies and eggs and, of course, those cinnabuns. Yum, yum,
makes me hungry. Then there is the wonderful Easter dinner and oh, yes,
there are Easter lilies, too.
Jack
Easter lilies?
Flossie
You should see the lovely lily plant my friend gave me. Here, I’ll show
you. Oh, NO! Look at it. It’s dead! It was so beautiful. I
think I’m going to cry.
Jack
Hey! Don’t cry over a silly plant. You should know that nothing lives
forever anyway.
Flossie
Nothing?
Jack
Well, do you know of anything or anyone who has lived forever? I don’t.
Smart doggie
Please excuse me, but I could not help but overhear you talking. I just
want to say that I know of someone who has lived, died and lived again.
Flossie
Jack
Together Who are you?
Smart doggie
They call me “Smart doggie,” and this is a true story. Would you like to
hear it?
Flossie
Oh, yes. I like stories.
Jack
Me, too. But what is that large book you are holding in front of you?
Smart doggie
This book is called a Bible. It tells us everything about how to live in
this world. It is all about God’s thinking and teaches us right from
wrong. One of the most important things is that it shows us the reason we
celebrate Easter.
Flossie
That sounds interesting.
Jack
Sure does. So go ahead, and tell us the story.
Smart doggie
You may already know that God, who lives in heaven with His Son, Jesus
Christ, made everything on earth and in heaven, including the first man
and woman.
He named them Adam and Eve and He gave them a
beautiful garden to live in. There were animals and flowers and wonderful
fruit trees from which they could eat freely. From just one tree God
told Adam and Eve, “You may NOT eat.” That tree was called The Tree of
the Knowledge of Good and Evil. It was the only tree in the garden that
was forbidden. Then one day, God’s enemy, Satan, sneaked into the garden
in the form of a snake. He told Eve a lie. He said that God didn’t want
Adam and Eve to eat from the forbidden tree because God did not want them
to become as smart as He was.
Eve believed the lie and she chose to
disobey. She ate some fruit from the forbidden tree. Then Eve talked her
husband, Adam, into eating some also.
Flossie
Wow! That was sure silly of her after God had given them so much.
Smart doggie
Yes, it was. That was when man’s first sin took place. It was the sin of
disobedience. God was not pleased and, as punishment, God said they could
not be friends anymore. He kicked Adam and Eve out of the perfect
garden. He said that everyone who lived after Adam and Eve would be under
the penalty of sin.
Smart doggie
This meant that none of us could live forever with God in heaven after our
life on earth. There was no hope for any of us at that time.
Jack
Boy, I’ll bet Adam and Eve were really sorry.
Smart doggie
I’m sure they were, but it was too late. They had disobeyed. Because of
God’s justice, they had to be punished. The snake was also punished.
From then on, it had to crawl on the ground in the dust. Of course,
everyone fell under the penalty of Adam and Eve’s sin. No more life after
death.
Flossie
Oh dear! But what does the word penalty mean?
Smart doggie
A penalty is a price that needs to be paid by some kind of punishment.
And, in this case, God had to be satisfied. Let’s say that your parents
had set up a rule that you were to come straight home from school. But
you decided to disobey, and you stopped over at a friend’s house to play.
This made you late coming home. As a punishment, your penalty was not
being allowed to watch TV for three nights.
Flossie
I see. Then when the three nights were over, the penalty was paid.
Right?
Smart doggie
Right!
Jack
In football, when one team member doesn’t play by the rules, the whole
team gets penalized. This causes the whole team to pay for one player’s
mistake.
Smart doggie
Now, you understand. So that’s why God’s special son, Jesus Christ, said
that He would come down to earth as a man and die on the cross for the
sins of the whole world. Then the penalty for Adam and Eve’s sin would be
paid for everyone, forever. God was satisfied, and this brought hope for
the whole human race.
Flossie
So, I guess that means that Jesus Christ took our place on the cross. Now
that the penalty has been paid, what happens? Is there anything else that
we must do to have everlasting life?
Smart doggie
Yes, there is one thing. The Bible says in Acts 16: 31, “Believe on the
Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.” This means that you just tell
God, the Father that you understand you are a sinner and that you believe
in His Son, Jesus Christ, as your personal savior. Faith alone in Christ
alone.
Jack
But that is so easy. Are you sure that there is nothing else we must do
to have everlasting life?
Smart doggie
I am very sure. After we accept this free gift of salvation, God,
the Holy Spirit, comes to live inside of us. He is our helper, and he
teaches us God’s Word through teachers and pastors. However, there is
more to my story. After some mean men beat Jesus Christ, they nailed Him
to a cross, and He died. Then they laid Him in a tomb. (That’s how they
handled the dead in those days.) On the third day, Jesus Christ came
alive again and went to heaven to live with God again. So, you see this
is the real reason that Christians celebrate Easter.
Jack
Wow! That’s quite a story, and I believe it too.
Flossie
Me too. Just thinking of all that makes me realize how unimportant new
clothes and Easter lilies are compared to what Jesus Christ did for us.
Smart doggie
It’s alright to have new clothes and Easter baskets and to enjoy other
things at Easter as long as we understand the true meaning of why
we celebrate this special day.
Jack
Thank you so much for explaining to us how much God must love us to send
His special Son to die on the cross for all of our sins that we might live
forever in heaven.
