Al
Hey, let’s celebrate!
Cassie
Celebrate?
Al
Yeah, you know. It’s the 4th
of July. Firecrackers,
lots of noise, flags waving . . . all that
stuff.
Cassie
Oh, yes, we should have a party, but remember . . . firecrackers
can be dangerous unless we have an adult around. Isn’t that right, Foxie?
Foxie
Absolutely, Cassie. You know it is a very important
Day for the United
States of America. And we want to remember that on the 4th of
July back in the year 1776, America won her freedom from the British
during the War of Independence.
Cassie
Well, we know that freedom is very important.
Hey, I’ve got it. Let’s have a tea
party.
Al
A tea party! No thanks! That’s one
of the reasons America and Britain got into the war of 1776. Haven’t you
ever heard of the Boston Tea Party?
Cassie
Oh, yes, I have and I can understand why they
wanted to be independent. Most cats are
very independent.
Al
Yes they are. They are also very curious.
Cassie
That’s right. I am curious. I just wonder about things
sometimes. Right now, I am wondering why people are willing to fight in
wars and maybe even die for our freedoms.
Al
Maybe it’s because freedom is never free.
Foxie
That is very true. Sacrifices need to be made. We should be very
thankful for the men and women in our military who believe enough in our
freedoms that they would give their lives for this great country so we can
stay free.
Cassie
Well, you know what? I’m also curious about what God thinks about wars.
Doesn’t the Bible say we should not kill.
Al
I believe we are told not to murder. That means not to take an innocent
life. The Bible does say there is a time for wars, doesn’t it, Foxie?
Foxie
God helped the Israelites to win many victories over their enemies through
wars. The Bible teaches there is a time for war, and that it is sad when,
sometimes, innocent people die. But if we do not fight to keep our
freedoms, we could have unfair, evil men ruling over us. They could keep
us from telling others about the Lord Jesus Christ dying on the cross for
our sins. And telling others how, if we are believers, we can live in
Heaven with God forever, after our life on earth is over.
Cassie
Could our Bibles ever be taken away?
Foxie
That has happened in other countries before.
Al
But without our Bibles, we couldn’t learn what God thinks, so we can grow
to love Him and grow up spiritually. Wow! Freedom is really great!
Cassie
(singing) Born free . . . da da da da da
Foxie
Sorry to interrupt your song Cassie, but you see, through God’s perfect
plan, everyone in the world has choices to make, like accepting the Lord
Jesus Christ as personal saviour, or not accepting Him. We are not
born free.
Al
Wasn’t there some kind of penalty to be paid when when Adam and Eve
disobeyed God in the garden?
Foxie
Yes, the penalty of sin was handed down to each of us because Adam and Eve
disobeyed God and that was the first sin. Remember that story?
Al
Yeah, that got us all into trouble. Then God sent His son Jesus Christ to
die on the cross for everyone’s sins, so He paid the penalty for the whole
world.
Cassie
Now that the penalty has been paid, what about our life on earth before we
go to Heaven?
Foxie
While we are living on earth, we as believers can also have freedom over
our old sin nature. In 1st John 1:9, the Bible says that if
we name our sins
to God, He will forgive us our sins and will cleanse us from all the ones
we did not realize were sin. This gives us the freedom to get
back in fellowship with God and continue to grow spiritually.
Cassie
Wow! We do have a lot of freedoms, don’t we?
Al
I’ll say. The freedom to choose to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and
go to Heaven.
Cassie
And as a believer, the freedom to use 1st John 1:9 and learn to
control the sin nature with the Holy Spirit’s help. Then we can please
God.
Foxie
Also, we are free to have our Bibles and free to tell others about the
good news that Jesus Christ died for their sins.
In some countries, you can be
punished if you are heard telling others about God’s plan for salvation,
or for having a Bible.
Cassie
In our great country of America, we can worship the way we choose.
Al
We can say what we want and write about what we think, and when we are old
enough, we can vote for the leaders we want.
Foxie
We should be very thankful to God that we can live in the United States of
America and enjoy so many freedoms. We also need to be careful not to
abuse our freedoms.
Cassie
I’m sure glad that we were born in America, the land of the free.
Al
I am proud of our flag, and I am proud to be an American. Guess we just
lucked out.
Foxie
I think we can say we were “graced out” by God. May she always
stay free. Henry Cabot Lodge once said, “The flag stands for all that we
hold dear . . . Freedom and Democracy . . . a government of the
people, by the people, and for the people. Then it is our duty to defend
the flag which stands for all.”
Together SO LET’S CELEBRATE!
